Whipping Naughty Software into Shape On Your Server

We know the feeling exactly: Something has gone wrong with your server software, and after struggling with the system for hours, you’re just about ready to smash the server with a large, intimidating object. However, before you go caveman on your hardware, we’d suggest you take it easy and consider the following: Software issues can be fixed with a little troubleshooting, and likely without any sort of hard server reset. You don’t need a miracle to get back onto the tracks, just a little patient and guidance.

With that in mind, if you’re encountering severe issues with your server software, use the following tips to realign your gears and get the train rolling once more. We can’t guarantee an instant fix, but these pointers will certainly help you diagnose your patient, at the least.

1.  Errors: If you’re lucky, the software will give you some kind of error to work with. If that’s the case, check the error logs and look for specifics. If you’re unfamiliar with the error code, just perform a quick Google search. Someone on the Internet has a ready-made solution, meaning you have no reason to panic if an error code is involved.

2.  Software Configuration: Have you recently monkeyed with either the server software or its plug-ins? If you have, try resetting everything back to the defaults, and hope it solves the problem. If your software begins behaving pleasantly, then you’ve localized the issue, and are free to tweak items until again the software goes down. If not, move on to the next location, Pilgrim: You’re not done just yet!

3.  Version: If your software configurations are all golden, perhaps you have an issue with your software version. Is everything up to date? Or perhaps you’ve recently upgraded, and now the most recent release is screwing with your total system? If either is case, take the appropriate measures to compensate.

4.  Bad Installation: We know this is a catchall, but sue us. Sometimes things just go wrong, and the only error is a faulty install. It doesn’t happen all the time, but files do get put in the wrong locations, or scripts are botched in being moved. If you’ve recently installed new software, considering performing a re-install with the hope that it will correct the overall issue. It’s a long-shot, but one that may just work.
