Search Engine Optimization – Site Building Tactics to Avoid

Learning effective search engine optimization can be a fairly difficult task, especially if you do not have the right tools and tutorials to learn from. It seems like everywhere you turn someone is trying to tell you what you need to do to make your site more appealing to all search engines. However, you rarely see information regarding what you should avoid doing for successful search engine optimization.

Search Engine Crawlers

Your main focus when optimizing your site for successful SEO should be keeping the site easily indexed by search engine crawlers. Search engine crawlers are web bots that automatically comb the web indexing all information they find on any website. Using this information, your site is placed in the search engine, and when someones searches for a particular keyword or phrase, they may find your site depending on the popularity and build of your website.  Making your site easily indexable by search engine crawlers is the best way to quickly earn a substantial page rank. Instead of telling you what you should do to have your site effectively crawled by the web crawlers, the following information will let you know what NOT to do when building your site.

Do Not Use Flash Content

Although flash content is very entertaining for your visitors, it is not suitable for effective site indexing.  In particular, you want to avoid flash navigation. Any of the links on your site that are made using Flash animation will not be indexed by the search engine. Try to keep all of your internal links in basic HTML, especially when first starting your website.

Do Not Use Password Protected Pages

Web crawlers cannot access pages that are password protected, for example member sections. Therefore, it is useless to optimize your members only pages for search engines, as this information cannot and will not be indexed by search engine crawlers. In a way, this is a positive aspect, as the information in your paid members section will not be made public to anyone unless they pay you. However, if you want to optimize your entire site in the beginning, then it is advisable to refrain from creating a section of the site with password protected pages. After all, if you do not have a healthy traffic flow, you will not be able to recruit members anyway.

Do Not Use Frames

Frames let you display two separate HTML files on a single page. An example of a frame would be a box that remains in the same spot on the page while the user surfs the website, such as a navigational or instructional box. Although frames are still used in many instances, they are really outdated because many people don't like using them since search engine crawlers cannot effectively index them.

Conclusion

There are a lot of ways to improve the search engine optimization of your website, and each method has its uses. However, there are also many site building methods that will contradict your efforts, and you should first become aware of these detrimental site building methods before you attempt to optimize your site.
