Retrieving Lost Log-in Credentials

It’s often as difficult as getting an act passed by Congress than to retrieve lost log-in web host information such as a username, especially a lost password.  Security is a major concern for web hosting providers and customers, so taking drastic proactive measures is admirable; however, it’s equally as important to grant accessible authorized access to log-in information to prevent downtime.

Following the Paper Trail

Upon purchasing a web hosting package, typically most providers generate an automatic e-mail that’s sent immediately to the registered account address.   In theory, the e-mail should serve a as a paper trail in case the information is ever misplaced or forgotten, however, in application it doesn’t always provide to be a reliable backup source, especially if it’s stored on a desktop e-mail software program.

If you know your username, but not your password, then the chances of you retrieving or resetting your information is good.  Your web host provider should have a clickable link prompting you to enter a username in order to obtain a password.  Often, an e-mail account also suffices to access password information.

Chances are slim of recovering information, however, if you don‘t have a username or the e-mail account has changed and not been updated since registering with the web host.  It’s required to at least enter an account number or valid e-mail address to access your account.  Once the information is successfully entered and accepted, most web host providers allow you to reset your password.

Generally, the link to reset log-in credentials is sent to the e-mail address associated with the account.  It’s possible if for some reason you don’t receive the link in your inbox within the appropriate amount of time, it’s been sent to a spam or junk e-mail folder; therefore double-check before hitting the panic button.    After viewing and clicking the link, you’re then prompted to follow the necessary steps to reset your log-in information.

If you still encounter technical difficulties in retrieving lost information, customer support is also an option.  Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of calling a customer support representative is the time spent waiting on hold to talk to a live person.  While some web hosts boasts of calls being answered within minutes, others may place you on hold seemingly forever.  Live chat support is a quick and convenient option; however, it’s not always possible to obtain sensitive information in such a manner.

Password Managers

Many individuals opt to use password managers to make the daily tasks of logging into various sites and programs less time consuming and mentally draining.  Popular programs such as RoboForm, Sticky Password, SurfSecret KeyPad, Password Manager XP, and TraySafe are helpful when responsible for multi-tasking.  The password manger software programs range in price from $20 - $30 each.  Additionally, web browsers allow users to choose to remember log-in information.  Although a good idea for a single user, it’s not recommended for a system accessible to multiple users.

Whether memorizing log-in information or depending on a software manger program, protecting the sensitive information should be taken seriously.  Once the information is compromised, the undoing costs valuable resources that could have been prevented.
