Facebook to Improve Security

Facebook is the most popular social networking website in existence. With over 500 million users across the globe engaging in simultaneous conversation, it is vital to ensure the security of the users is robust. As a result, the Facebook team has implemented new measures to protect users from cyber bullying and other online risks. The goal of these new security features is to make Facebook a more trusted online brand.

The Family Safety Center

One new feature is the Family Safety Center which will hold a variety of online articles for parents and teens regarding privacy and safety procedures on the Internet. The Family Safety Center will also deliver a free educational guide to teachers. Another integrated safety resource is the Social Reporting Tool which gives teens the ability to notify a trusted adult if they are bullied while on the website.

The philosophy of the Safety Center is that safety should be an ongoing conversation between parents and kids, teachers and students and companies and customers. This will allow everyone to be involved and make smart decisions on the Internet. Facebook plays the roll of removing abusive content and maintaining a strict terms and conditions with regards to safety matters.

The Family Safety Center is separate from the main page but can be found in the Profile, Pages and Groups section of the website. This allows easy access to the resource from anywhere on the Facebook website so no searching is required.

Updating Personal Information and Privacy Settings

Facebook has taken other steps to ensure the safety of its users. For instance, any user can update their username, password, email and other account settings at any given time. Also, Facebook has implemented privacy settings which allow users to control who is allowed to view your profile, photos, posts and other aspects of the software.

Eliminating Harassment

Additionally, users have the ability to unfriend an individual and block someone if they are being harassed. Furthermore, if an individual is being harassed, they have the option to report the harasser for abusive content. The easiest method for reporting this is using the “Report” link found directly next to the post, profile or page areas of Facebook.

With so many users and the emergence of online bullying in the past several years, these security measures are long over due. The implementation of educational articles regarding internet security is an excellent touch that will benefit many users.
