Can You Make A Profit As A Reseller Host?

If you’re like us, you may very well have been eyeing the copious (and often cheap) reseller hosting plans currently available on the Net. There are now more ways to host a reseller account then there are stars in the sky—okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration—and if you’re looking for a quick way to make a profit, it’s as if there’s no better way than to open your own reseller-based hosting business. However, before you bit the bullet and sign any contracts, let’s first take a look at the actual potential to make bank with a reseller plan, including the pros and cons of such an investment. It’s not nearly as cut-and-dry as you think, so check out our thoughts below to earn yourself a crash course education!

1.  You’re Never Alone: First off, keep in mind that you are not the first, thousandth, or even millionth person to consider opening a reseller hosting business. If even one percent of everyone who has concerned such a proposal actually followed through, you’d still be facing a massive amount of competition. In other words, the market is bloody saturated, and you’ll be lucky to gain traction. There are hundreds of full-featured hosting providers already out there, so what makes your small-time operation the best around? It’s up to you to figure this out, and if you don’t, you run the risk of never quite gaining a consumer base.

2.  Time, Give Me Time: Keep in mind as well that web hosting is typically a long-term investment for most consumers. As a hosting provider, you’ll have to ensure that you’ll be around long enough to meet the time commitment your users are first ponying up. This means making plans to sell hosting semi-permanently, if not for a long time to come. This shouldn’t necessarily scare you off, but if you haven’t though the man hours commitment through, you really aught to first before signing any leases.

3.  Be Brilliantly Different: If you are to make any money at all out of being a reseller host, you’ll want to come up with some kind of niche to differentiate yourself from the herd. What this is remains in your hands, but without it, you’re piloting the Titanic through Hell. Come up with a specific marketing scheme, pick a target market, and then shoot for the moon. Don’t be afraid to be unique: In fact, your quirk is just about all you’ve got going for you.
