Why You Should Be Using A Linux-Based OS For Your Server

We know we’re being totally mainstream here, but you really should be using Linux for your server. The platform is stabler, offers more depth—as well as a host of incredible features—and no matter the downsides, most web masters will tell you the same: Linux is simply king where servers are concerned.

If you’re like us, though, you’ll likely need a bit more convincing then that. If you don’t, then power to you! Our job is done. For the rest of you lot, however, we’ve got a few thoughts lined up below on why Linux is the only operating system you should be considering for your new server.

1.  It’s Cheap: Seriously, though, if Linux has anything going for it, it’s price. Most Linux distributions can be found for free, and though you won’t be winning any stellar tech-support with that (though there are plenty of tech options floating around for purchase) you’ll definitely be cutting corners in your budget. If you’d like the stability of something that comes with prepaid tech support, you can always download Red Hat and give the Red Hat Network a go. It’s a nice compromise, and you’ll still be saving in the long run.

2.  Get Scripty With Multiple Languages: If you need PHP, MySQL, or Perl, Linux is an obvious choice. The platform supports all of these, a feature you won’t be finding anywhere else. If you’re a heavy script writer, you really owe it to yourself to use a Linux-based platform—then again, if you’re a really heavy script writer, you probably already are using Linux.

3. Security and Stability: Best of all, Linux has a reputation as being far stabler and infinitely more secure than other operating systems you could choose from. Not mentioning any names—Okay, fine Windows, we mean you—other offerings have been known to be a playground for hackers to work their way through. Linux, on the other hand, comes with an astronomically high uptime, as well as root access that makes it much more difficult to successfully hack.

To be honest, if you haven’t tried Linux yet, you owe it to yourself to play around, anyway. The platform is just plain fun, a fact most geeks will readily admit. If you have any interest at all in cutting edge computing, or want to get your hands messy with the real inner workings of your operating system, Linux is the real, rugged stuff.Popular Links
