Why Linux Web Hosting Is More Popular Than Windows Hosting
Windows and Linux have long been battling for the front spot as the most popular operating system for personal computers. Many people don't realize that the same battle is also being waged in the web hosting industry. However, the war is much more one-sided as far as web hosting operating systems are concerned, and Linux is currently leading the way by a long margin. There are a plethora of reasons why web hosting providers and webmasters prefer to use the Linux operating system for their web servers, and there are an equal amount of reasons as to why they prefer not to use Windows. The following information explains why Linux web hosting is more popular than Windows web hosting.
Open Source Compatibility and Expandability
Since Linux is an open source operating system, it is constantly being improved and expanded by a community of developers that regularly contribute information and tips to help each other improve the functionality of the software. Windows, on the other hand, is not an open source software and therefore relies entirely upon the manufacturer, Microsoft, to release updates and provide bug fixes. Unfortunately, these bug fixes and updates can take months to arrive in some cases, leaving the web hosting provider and web hosting customer completely out of luck. Since Linux is an open source software, it is possible to develop web applications that are completely compatible with it, and any developer with the necessary interest and knowledge can expand the operating system with relatively minimal risk and effort.
Open-Source Affordability and Flexibility
The Linux operating system is also free, and is offered in a wide variety of versions which are typically referred to as “flavors.” Each version of Linux is more suitable for the particular skill level, preference set, or technological needs of an individual webmaster. On the other hand, Windows is usually distributed in just a few versions, with each one being extremely similar to the next. Since the Linux operating system is free, it can quickly and easily be installed on multiple Web servers and in multiple web hosting accounts without causing the hosting company or account holder to incur any additional costs. Thus, any funds that are allocated to the management and improvement of the web server's operating system can be devoted solely to the expansion and improvement of Linux, rather than simply maintaining it or purchasing a basic copy. Since web hosting providers do not have to pay for the Linux operating system, they are able to pass these lower monthly prices on to their customers.
Open-Source Simplicity and Functionality
Although Windows users may be more accustomed to the Windows user interface, which is characterized by simplistic menu designs and user-friendly application structures, the Linux operating system is just as simple, however may appear to be more primitive to the average Windows user. Nonetheless, Linux is capable of nearly everything that Windows is, and it is even possible to run virtualization software within the Linux hosting environment to install Windows on a Linux Web server.
