Hosts Offering Good Linux VPS Packages

VPS hosting is quickly growing in popularity.  It seems to be surviving its infancy well, and the only noticeable problem people seem to have with it is its cost.

As Linux hosting tends to be cheaper than its Windows counterparts, this is making Linux VPS hosting an increasingly popular choice with lots of viable hosts to select from.  We'll look here at some of the good offers out there.  This list won't look at the cheapest hosts, but rather the ones that seem to us to offer the most solid overall Linux VPS hosting packages.

1) KickAssVPS.com

Don't let this hosts's interesting name fool you.  This newer entry into the hosting world seems to have done their homework.  They have a number of customizable packages, the best of which appears to be their Cloud VPS Performance account.  $25/month gets the user 10GB of space, 1 gig of RAM and 2 dedicated IP addresses on a quad-core machine.  All of their plans let you choose from 6 different Linux OS variants, and extra space and bandwidth can be added on easily.

2) HostEasier

We don't have enough experience with HostEasier yet to know if they live up to their name.  What we know is that they have some great deals for those who need a VPS package with a little more kick to it.  They have 5 VPS accounts, from 0 to 4, and the middle three seem to offer the best overall value.  Centering in on … well, the center, the $40/month “VPS 2” package gives the user 60GB of space, 2TB per month of bandwidth, 1.5 Ghz of guaranteed CPU and up to 2GB of burstable RAM (1.5G guaranteed).

3) JoinVPS

The pricing structure for JoinVPS contains an interesting dynamic: many of their adjustable features become cheaper the higher the package you pick.  For example, using OpenVZ VPS, extra bandwidth starts out at $.50/G for the lowest package, and increases to $.10/G for the highest.  Because of this, we recommend the OpenVZ VPS-5, with its 30GB of space and 3GB of burstable RAM for only $31.95.  Incidentally, that is another advantage of these guys: not only do they offer 5 different Linux/Unix operating systems, but they also use two different VPS software packages, OpenVZ and Xen.

4) VPSLAND.com

VPSLAND.com offers 18 different levels of VPS packages.  These are very high end packages, so this is the selection for someone who is willing to pay the extra buck for a real powerhouse deal, mainly in the area of extra kick (CPU and RAM).  Balancing the different things you get, we would recommend the Level 5 package: 5GB of RAM, 5GHz of CPU for $124.90/month: that may seem high, but that's because few hosts even offer anything at this power level.  Their VPS servers use 7 different operating system variants and come with over 60 web apps.

5) HostGator

We tried to focus on some lesser known hosts for this article, but we can't deny that HostGator makes a strong case for their Level 3 package.  While some would quip that it doesn't entirely compare to the above packages, we are discussing overall value.  $40/month for 30GB of space and 1.1GHz of processor power is a really good deal.  HostGator's long-running experience and reputation make it even better.  Those who want good services backed by good service will find it here.
