Safe Harbor Certification Acquired by Nexcess

Leading eCommerce web hosting provider, Nexcess, recently announced its new certification from the U.S.-E.U. Safe Harbor Framework. This achievement promotes the safe transfer of personal information between European nations and the United States. This is timely considering Nexcess’ recent expansion into the European marketplace.

The History of the U.S.-E.U Safe Harbor Framework

The U.S.-E.U. Safe Harbor Framework is integrated with the European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection. Enacted in 1998, the directive prohibits transferring personal information to non-European Union nations that do not meet European standards related to privacy protection.

Although both entities share the mission of privacy protection between the two locations, their methods have slightly differed in the past. Therefore, to bridge the gap between methods, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the European Commission worked together to create the U.S.-E.U. Safe Harbor Framework, an international standard with the best of both worlds.

The Importance of Standards Compliance

Nexcess recently expanded into the United Kingdom and wanted to give its new customers the greatest assurances that the company values data protection. The company further indicated how important standards compliance is so their recent certification is a token of maintaining these ongoing efforts.

Recent International Standards Compliance

Although the announcement to provide eCommerce web hosting in the United Kingdom was only recently announced, the company has over a decade of standards-compliance. In March 2011, Nexcess’ Dearborn, Michigan data center undertook an audit to comply with the international standard ISAE 3402. This international standard is equivalent to SSAE-16 in the United States which is the successor to SAS 70 standards auditing.

Nexcess Company Information

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nexcess is a managed web hosting provider established in 2000. Other data center facilities are located in Dearborn and Southfield, Michigan. The company offers customers a variety of web hosting services including entry-level packages, specially customized configurations and complicated plans. The company’s primary focus is on mission-critical web hosting for high profile eCommerce websites.

Any organization that takes the initiative to constantly be compliant in domestic and international standards earns a large amount of credibility. In the case of Nexcess, to be competitive in a difficult European market, the company must have an angle. In this instance, their edge is earning the certification from the U.S.-E.U Safe Harbor Framework. This has allowed new European customers to trust the web hosting provider and sign up for new hosting packages.
