It Exists: A 1 Million Square Foot Data Center in Manhattan

Large data center owner and operator, Sabey Data Center Properties, recently announced its acquisition of a one million square foot data center in the middle of Manhattan, New York for $120 million from M & T Bank. Named Intergate Manhattan, the new data center tower will focus specifically on technology and be located at 375 Pearl Street in the lower section of the island.

Built in the 1970’s, the building acted as a central office for New York Telephone which has since been acquired by Verizon who owns three floors in the facility for condominium purposes. The 32 story property will feature a new infrastructure in addition to the expansion to connectivity diversity. The facility is scheduled to open at the beginning of 2012.

Intergate Manhattan will be designed to be the most energy-efficient building in New York City while maintaining a high level of robustness. The tower currently boasts 18 megawatts of power with Sabey planning to expand to 40 megawatts of redundant power.

375 Pearl Street is at the confluence of the world’s transatlantic cable and fiber optic routes. Therefore, as the Sabey network continues to expand, these wires play a critical role. The company is also expected to become the primary data center facility for medial, scientific and academic research centers located in Lower Manhattan while help to build the world capital for data enterprises.

Sabey also hired Joseph B. Ryan as the new Managing Director of Development for the New York facility. As a nationally recognized guru in the development field, Ryan also worked at Tishman Construction for 28 years, helping to establish Tishman Technologies. Current tenants at Sabey’s other data center locations that are likely to be attracted to Intergate Manhattan include:

  • Microsoft
  • Savvis
  • T-Mobile
  • Internap
  • VMware
  • JP Morgan Chase

The location will be entirely managed by Sabey Technology Staff. The data center will provide turn-key solutions customized specifically to its customers with a variety of features including; varying power and space, connectivity and shell space for the design, building and implementation of their own data center.

The creation of this new data center facility will be attractive to many major organizations in the New York City area and across the East Coast. Although an expensive move, Sabey is sure to experience and excellent return on investment in the coming years.
