GoDaddy Launches 4th Generation Cloud Hosting
Industry-leading web hosting provider and domain name registrar, GoDaddy, recently announced it has launched the 4th generation of cloud hosting. The launch comes only one month after the company announced its acquisition by KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures. The investment is reported to be in the range of $2 billion although the deal is not yet complete.
Report by GigaOm
GigaOm released a report in June 2011 speculating that GoDaddy’s 4th generation cloud hosting products would launch in July. In the announcement, GoDaddy revealed that it has been “in the cloud” before the terminology was even coined. However, 4th generation cloud hosting is the next and highest level of service.
Reaching a Wide Customer Base
GoDaddy has developed into a household name for domain registration and web hosting due to the clever advertising using Danica Patrick. Although the products are 4th generation, this is the company’s first step into cloud-based services. With over 9.4 million customers and over 49 million domain names, the newly-launched cloud products are sure to be adopted by many of those clients.
Customer Demand for Cloud Services
GoDaddy initially launched cloud-based Mac OS X web hosting in February 2010. Therefore this launch is for Linux and Windows-based systems. The reason for the launch of cloud hosting is the result of customer feedback that demanded more scalability than share hosting could offer.
Pros and Cons
Clients using the new service will receive dynamic traffic management, defense management and server management which are equipped with close-to-enterprise level service. At the moment, the 4th generation cloud hosting provides no support for ColdFusion, Java and FrontPage web extensions. Also, the service does not support email hosting, cPanel or Plesk and streaming video but allows multiple domains hosting. Additionally, Microsoft Access is not supported.
Statement from the CEO
The CEO of GoDaddy released a statement detailing that the cloud hosting was developed so their customers could succeed. For instance, in the past if a customer was mentioned on a television show, their web traffic would immediately skyrocket. Therefore, GoDaddy would move them from a shared to dedicated hosting plan. This was inefficient so the company decided they needed a platform that could react quickly; like cloud hosting.
Given the size of GoDaddy, it is surprising they have not made the transition to the new technology yet. However, with almost unlimited resources, the company could make their new cloud hosting technology one of the best in the industry.
