Why You Should Be Aware of Web Standards
For many web masters the very thought of web standards is to be shirked, avoided, and generally left in the dank, dark corner from whence it came. If they are to be thought about all, it will be done with the web designer or developer in mind, and then never again. However, things really shouldn’t be this way, as web standards are designed with the end-user (and your customer satisfaction) in mind. If you aren’t sold on the idea of web standards, or have no bloody idea what they even are, we have a few thoughts below that might yet change your mind on the subject.
First off, it’s worth mentioning what web standards even are, especially for those among us who are sadly uninitiated. Web standards are like ethical practices for web developers, dictating the kosher way to code for HTML, CSS, and other popular web technologies. Think of web standards exactly as you would the Geneva Convention. They’re designed to ensure maximum compatibility, as well as overall support for browser types of all shapes and sizes. Which leads us into our next point, coincidentally!
The benefits of understanding and implementing web standards are darn near innumerable, but right of the bat, optimizing your site to meet code will ensure that all of your users are able to see and use your content. Web standards are built from the ground up to be optimized for every major browser in existence, and work efficiently with web renderers to keep your content pure. This includes mobile browsers, which can be tricky to begin with. Using web standards in your development process ensures that the end product plays nice with others, and is easier to build int he first place.
Not to mention that, in general, everybody should be granted access to your website and content. Call us a bunch of hippies, but shouldn’t the Web be as free as possible? By guaranteeing everyone admission to your site, you’re not only increasing your potential audience, but you’re also leaving a lasting impression on the Internet itself. Web standards are designed with hardware and human accessibility in mind, and are a fantastic way to improve both within your own holdings.
Lastly, bugs are easier to fix when your code is standards compliant. Optimizing your lines for the highest compatibility ultimately makes it easier to revise and improve in areas where problems arise.
