When To Spring for a VPS - And Why

If you’re business has been expanding like weeds, and now you’re in the market for a quality, dedicated hosting model that’s ready-made to meet your increased demand, you’re likely faced with a couple of options. The first is to haul out the big bucks on a full dedicated server with oodles of RAM and enough disc space to house the library of Alexandria. However, the other option—hiring a provider that offers a virtual private server, or VPS—might be the best option. Why do we say that? We thought you’d never ask!

Check below for our few (but extremely intelligent thoughts) on why you should host with a VPS rather than adding a full dedicated server to your regime.

1.  Cost is Key: This isn’t an economics lesson, but a VPS will always be cheaper than a full-on dedicated server. This is because, essentially, you’re paying for a portion of a full hardware set, rather than the full set itself. However, that does not mean you won’t be getting the same service! A VPS can act and perform in a very similar manner to a dedicated server, and at a fraction of the cost. You won’t be getting as much raw power, but then again, do you really need that many horses in the engine? On that note:

2.  Know Your Goals: How much expansion are you really shooting for? If you’ve out-stripped your demand in a short amount of time, perhaps the massive amounts of space and processing power available through a dedicated server really are what you need. However, if you’ve had a more gradual climb up the industry rung, and are only just now needing more space and thinking reserves, a VPS is a brilliant stair step between shared hosting and dedicated hosting that will save you a bundle.

You’re Still Master of Your Domain: Even though a VPS is hosted on someone else’s server, this doesn’t mean you aren’t getting the same control as you would with a dedicated rig. Most providers will give you nearly unlimited access to your server, allowing you to change the operating system, MySQL access, dynamic web applications, and just about anything else you care to name. A virtual private server will not cut corners where your control is concerned, and comes at only a portion of the cost of a larger, more substantial investment. All in all, if you know your goals and have a budget in mind, a VPS is likely the way to go for your business.Popular Links
