What to Know Before Choosing a Web Host: The Essentials

We won’t even begin to lie to you: The world of Internet web hosting is so shuttered up with options it’s just about unreal. Who in their right mind has the time to troll through the thousands of cheap options, looking for the one decent provider that’s both cost-efficient and comprehensive in its services? No one we know, that’s for sure! However, that doesn’t mean you have to settle for a web host that might not meet your needs. Like buying a fine used car, there are simply some tricks you should know before committing to a contract. With that in mind, read on below for some of our choice tips on how to effectively choose a quality web host.

1.  Connections are Key: Right out of the box, you want to be absolutely positive that your web host has high speed connectivity. If you’re going to pay for your space on the Internet, you want your content to appear rapidly, and with as little delay as possible. Try to find some sites hosted by the network, and look for any immediate hang-ups. Slow load times, or even total failures, should be a tremendous red flag.

2.  Get Solid Up-Time: Not to be James Brown, but you might as well get on up, now. Check with the web host about their up-time availabilities. This is your website we’re talking about, and we’re sure you want it available as much as possible. With that in mind, just do a quick poll, asking for statistics about power failures, or any other potential deterrents from a quality hosting experience.

3.  Ensure Compatibility: The next step you should take is to query the web host about website compatibility. Will all of your content work with provider? Be sure to check for software discrepancies, or even operating system issues that may ground your efforts. Have you installed any dynamic web applications that make use of an unsupported coding environment? Any of these things might hinder your transfer to a new web host, and if they’re left unchecked, may lead to some unpleasant discoveries after a contract has already been agreed to.

4.  Tech Support: Lastly, be sure you have access to technical support whenever you need! Problems appear seemingly out of thin-air, and not having 24/7 support on hand is a huge turn-off.
