What To Do When Your Server Is Suddenly Frozen

Ah, the dreaded day has arrived at last! We always knew it would be more a question of “when” rather than “if” where hard drive crashes are concerned, but still: A server that’s suddenly locked you out is nothing to laugh about. If you were happily using your server, only to quickly find it frozen stiff as an ice cube, remember that you shouldn’t panic. There are steps you can take to correct the issue, and before doing anything drastic, be sure to check our handy list below. It’s much easier to reset when you still have a server, so think hard before making any decisions.

All of our warnings aside, you need a solution, and we’ve got it: Head on beyond the break to find what you need, Soldier!

1.  Do Some Digging: First, find out just how large of a freeze-out you’re looking at. Are all of your server’s sites down, or is it just yours? Perhaps it’s just the sites that are linked by a common IP address? At the very least, your problem could be as small as a single domain name that wasn’t renewed in time. Be sure to check these variables first.

2.  Tunnel In, Great Escape Style: Next, attempt to tunnel into your server’s command shell using SSH. If you can get into the beast, it means that your machine is up and running, and that it’s still connected to the Internet. This is a good sign. If you can SSH into your server, check your web server for potential crashes. Likewise, troll through your database server for errors, if your site requires it.

3.  Ping Pong, All Day Long: If you cannot establish a connection via SSH with your server, try pinging the monster. If that doesn’t work, you’re potentially looking at a much larger problem. Likely, something is wrong with your network connection, or potentially the server itself. Check with your provider for server-side errors, of if you’re making use of managed hosting, call up that technical support you’re paying so much for and give them a right ear-full!

Get a Cab: If you’ve done all of that, and there’s still no connection with the server, you’re potentially facing a trip do the hardware space itself. Check for hard drive errors, or other physical barriers that may be giving you problems.Popular Links
