What Features do I Need In a Web Host?

Shopping for the perfect web host is very similar to shopping for a car in a lot of respects. You’ll need to know the brands, understand the pros and cons of all the different varieties, and have a general feel for what “fits” you best. It’s a complicated procedure, and ending up with a less-than-ideal web host could cause massive headaches further on down the road.

This is a problem only made worse by the fact that so many web hosts offer more features than any of us know what to do with. It’s a wilderness of options, and if you aren’t careful, you may be paying for services that you neither need nor use. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a short list of thoughts and offerings that you might be able to lose when hiring a web host.

Right off the bat, you’ll want to consider what kind of software your server comes loaded with. For example, will you be needing access to a MySQL database, or any other complex, high-end web application service? If so, then you’ll want to spring for a hosting package that includes a wide variety of standard software items. However, if you’re only intending to run a weblog, then don’t bother with all that extra gumbo! Make sure the hosting plan comes with WordPress, and then move on! Or, if you’d rather, see if you can find a host that offers more than just ye olden WordPress. Either way, don’t pay for software you won’t use.

Secondly, consider what kind of amenities come with your web host. For example, are you going to need an e-shop for your site? If you’re only hocking a few handmade craft items, or simply want an online front for your small business, don’t shoot for a massive, database-oriented store. However, if you do need a massive e-commerce option to run a business on-par with Amazon.com, go for something that supports videos, complex shopping carts, and SSL access. Don’t undercut your business: In fact, it’s always better to anticipate growth and future needs now, rather than trying to scale up later.

Lastly, remember that web hosts, like car manufacturers, include extras to snooker you. Most web hosts will try to sell you more than you need, because let’s face it, they’re trying to make a living, too. As long as you’re aware of it, and conscious of what you’re buying, you’ll be in the right and hosting in the clear.
