The Benefits and Costs of Using A Cloud-Based Email Client

You don’t have to tell us twice: Cloud computing is absolutely everywhere, getting into our articles, our businesses, and even our drywall cracks. The latter was a joke, but we’re still very serious about this. Almost every aspect of web hosting now comes with a “cloud” option, including email and email management. This is far from a tragedy—cloud servers have increased the functionality of content delivery networks dramatically—but before signing away your communications hub to a cloud-based third-party, why not let us walk you through the pros and cons of doing so? This will only take a minute, and with a little extra attention paid, you might just save yourself some headaches.

1.  Viruses Be Gone: First out of the chute, placing all of your email activity in the hands of a cloud-based third-party guarantees you absolute security from viruses and scams. Without a central point for the malevolent hordes to attack, there’s just no real risk of your data being lost to Web pirates. This is quite the advantage, and one that’s compounded by the fact that:

2.  Maintenance Be Gone (As Well): With a cloud-based email, you’ll never have to worry about maintenance ever again. This is because your provider will take care of all the hardware and software issues, leaving you to simply send and receive in total bliss.

3.  Save At The Bank: Not only that, but typically a cloud-based email client will save you a lot of your yearly budget. This is because the physical overhead of using a cloud network is far cheaper than that of a traditional server bank. Set-up is typically cheaper, too, in case you had any concerns about that sort of thing.

4.  Hope You’re Not Modest: However, when all of your data is being passed through a network controlled by a third-party, you do run the risk of losing your privacy. This isn’t to say you should distrust cloud-email providers, but without having all your eggs in a handy, secure basket, there is the chance that your mail is being read.

5.  You’re (Possibly) Stuck: The other main concern we have with cloud-based emailing is portability. If you decide to up and move to a new provider, will you be able to translate and port all of your data with you? If you aren’t careful, you may be locked in place, or face the risk of starting over again.
