April Fool’s Day Pranks by Web Hosting Providers

April Fool’s Day is a time for pranks and fun at home and around the office. Well web hosting companies decided to get in on the action as well this year. Many providers sent out emails to their customers with absurd new products and services. The press release messages were sent by the following companies:

  • iHost3G
  • Livedrive
  • Google
  • HostDime

iHost3G announced in their press release that they will soon be offering a new hosting platform based on 3G mobile technology. This new service will employ 3rd generation telecommunications standards that translate regular mobile devices into scalable content delivery solutions. The service is only known as an “exciting new paradigm.”

The company further stated that this new technology will be on par with current advanced web hosting technologies like cloud computing and mainframe. Also, \the 3G service will be available as early as the first quarter of 2012. In the press release, the CEO mentioned their progress on 5G which, if it does not yet exist, iHost3G will have to invent that as well since they invented the Internet.

Livedrive announced they have developed “print to paper storage technology” which is a new solution that allows customers to store their files by printing them directly to paper. By utilizing barcodes, Livedrive has pioneered this technology with no other companies offering any service remotely similar to this. Livedrive took this joke further by unveiling a video clip outlining the entire print to paper process.

Those pranksters at Google announced the launch of Gmail Motion which gives users the ability to view and send email messages using specific motions in front of a webcam. Since 2000, Google has pulled a variety of April Fool’s jokes. The company even has an entire webpage dedicated to this bogus feature.

Finally, HostDime has decided to provide web hosting from the International Space Station. This service is aptly known as ISS Web Hosting. The company has allegedly developed a relationship that permits them to place a web server on the International Space Station. The press release lists the numerous benefits of hosting from space arguing that these servers will outperform any equipment in space.

Each year, a variety of web hosting providers likes to play jokes on their customers. Ironically, many of the ideas are not completely impossible and could be available in the future. Until that day, it is fun to read the bogus but innovative ideas these companies develop.
