Exploring FrontPage Web Hosting

The simple days of developing and publishing a website using Microsoft’s FrontPage software begin with its inception in 1996.  The program revolutionized web design decades ago, yet as ever-changing and dynamic as the IT environment continues to be today, there is still a need for both the software and support.  Web hosting services provides such support for FrontPage by offering extensions that allow websites created with the out-dated software to be uploaded and remain operational without compromising function.

FrontPage Then

Microsoft FrontPage was a popular program during the dot.com era that conveniently allowed novice website designers to create competitive and dynamic websites introducing individual products and services to the global marketplace at a fraction of the cost and effort as compared to hiring experienced gurus to develop and maintain company websites.  FrontPage’s WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor allowed users to view and create pages as they appear when published online while granting novice designers to develop entire websites with a few clicks of a mouse and simply dragging icons and pictures to desired positions.

FrontPage Now

FrontPage is considered virtually obsolete in the IT world, and more advanced software and hosting options are emerging entering into the 21st century.   Microsoft has since released Expression Web and WebMatrix software to assist in developing professional and practical websites for both small and large-scale business endeavors.   Albeit, once a popular program to design websites with beginners specifically in mind, Microsoft no longer distributes FrontPage in its software bundles; however, there are numerous web hosting services that do support FrontPage extensions.

Web Hosts Offering FrontPage Support

For websites and applications created using FrontPage, various web hosts offer FrontPage support.  It’s important to inquire before opting for a hosting service if the company provides FrontPage server extensions and the version of FrontPage utilized, especially if your website was developed using the software or planned for future use.

Web hosting services that do accommodate FrontPage products offer proprietary plug-ins, or a group of server extension files on their servers to ensure proper functionality of FrontPage web pages and other related applications.  Without such extensions, the website will not function properly.   Although extensions are typically for Window hosting platforms, the plug-ins are also designed to function on several Linux and Unix hosting environments.

Even though other web design software and applications including Dreamweaver have bumped FrontPage from the spotlight, many individuals still use the reliable WYSIWYG program due to its simplicity and convenience of use.  Users are not required to have prior knowledge of programming languages or even basic HTML.  FrontPage suffices to meet the needs of most, therefore, there’s still a demand for the program and web hosting support.
