Five Helpful Tips for Registering a Domain Name

Registering the right domain name is the first step in building a successful online business or website. Unfortunately, most people have to register multiple domain names or spend months (or thousands of dollars) trying to find the right domain name before having success with domain registration. By utilizing simple proven techniques you can register a domain name that will bring you success in search engine optimization, converting visitors into customers, and increasing the chances of reselling the domain for profit in the future. The following five tips should help you register a domain name that will be valuable and profitable.

1. Choose Popular Domain Extensions

Domain name extensions, also known as a TLDs, are the letters that appear after primary domain name. For example, in the domain name "www.example.com" the TLD would be .com. By registering a domain name that contains a popular domain extension (such as .com, .net, .org, or even .info)  you can maximize your chances of reaching the top of the search engines with minimal effort.

2. Register Exact Match Domains

By registering a domain name that contains the exact match of a commonly searched for keyword you can increase the chances of ranking at the top of the search engines for words or phrases that will bring you residual web traffic with almost no effort. In fact, you can register a domain name that contains the exact match of popular keyword you can receive traffic from the search engines the very same day you build the site, regardless of how much content you've placed on its pages.

3. Use Proper Syntax When Registering Domains

When choosing a domain name to register it's best not to use hyphens, or numbers in substitution of letters (i.e. – 4 instead of for). Although using hyphens may make it easier to read the domain name, it will also decrease the search engine optimization value of the domain name (as the vast majority of people do not use hyphens when typing in phrases into the search engine). Ideally, you'll want to choose a short domain name that matches a popular keyword exactly and does not contain any hyphens and/or numbers.

4. Make Your Domain Name Memorable

Although some experienced web surfers will bookmark your website and add it to their favorites, a large majority of them will simply return based on their memory. Therefore, it is just make your domain name as memorable as possible, to minimize the chances of your site visitors returning to the wrong website. It is also good idea to register variations of your primary domain name to prevent competition from receiving mistaken visitors.

5. Register Variations Are Your Primary Domain Name

To retain the value of your websites name and brand you should consider registering variations of your primary domain name, such as misspellings, plural and singular forms, and multiple TLD's of the same primary domain name. Not only will this prevent your competition from registering such names, domain registrars also provide discounts when you purchase more than one variation of your primary domain.
