Go Open Source On Your Dedicated Server

Sure, there’s about three hundred and two different proprietary software pieces and web applications that will get the job done. You might even have a contract agreement with a major distributor that guarantees you free updates and tech support from here to Sunday. But we’d simply like to ask you: Have you stopped to genuinely consider all the benefits that open source development has to offer your dedicated server?

If you haven’t, then you’re very likely missing out. The genre of code puts a lot on the table, and considering most open source items are sans charge, there’s almost no reason not to give them a go. However, we realize you’re likely hesitant, and to abate your fears, we’ve compiled a few short reasons below why open source is always the way to go for your dedicated server. Don’t believe us? Then read on, Pilgrim, and leave your skeptic hat at the door!

1.    Weebles Wobble: Now, we’re not saying that open source coding is the end-all-be-all as far as stability goes, but then again, we might as well. Open source software has the best uptime, the least crashes, and the absolute pinnacle in sheer performance. Linux and BSD servers are so secure and so reliable that even institutions like CERN are using them to manage their day-to-day operations. You might not be splitting atomic particles, but if it’s good enough for the men in lab coats, it’s overkill for your dedicated server.

2.   Security: We’ll keep this one short: There are more Windows-specific viruses out there than one can shake a stick at. However, this is not because the OS is the most popular within the server community: It isn’t. Linux and BSD are the kings of the realm, and yet, when’s the last time you ever heard of a kernel-killing virus? They don’t exist, because open source is simply that secure.
Cost: We mentioned this briefly, but if you’re looking to save money and boost your budget, open source is the ideal solution. Not only is it free to install, but all of the maintenance, technical support, and upkeep come free of charge. Granted, you may need a bit more technical knowledge than with Windows, but at the end of the day, you’ll save a solid bundle by choosing Linux or BSD.
