Dedicated Servers: The Pros and Cons

If you opt to secure a dedicated server for your web hosting needs, it’s important to know the advantages and disadvantages in regards to your online venture.  While a dedicated server is favored because it’s one devoted solely for your website purposes, often the cost outweighs the advantages, especislly for small businesses with a limited budget.  Before making a final decision when securing a web host, you should first consider all of the pros and cons of a dedicated server.

Understanding Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server is an exclusive top-level web hosting service to support your website needs.  Typically, a dedicated server hosting plan allows you to pay a monthly or annual fee for space and services to establish a server in the respective host’s data center.  Co-location, similar to dedicated server hosting, allows you to rent a server from a respected hosting company, responsible for providing hardware but not always responsible for software management systems.  Regardless of which you choose, each has pros and cons.

Advantages of Dedicated Servers

The overall advantages of dedicated servers rests in the fact that the servers are located in physically secure data centers with efficient environmental controls and available access to standby generators.  Other advantages include:

  • Enhanced flexibility;
  • Improved performance and security;
  • Configure the server to efficiently meet your individual needs;
  • Upgrade the server as your online venture expands;
  • Manage full administrative access to the server;
  • Control the server’s software and OS and configuration.

 Disadvantages of Dedicated Servers

While there are numerous perks of securing a dedicated server, there are also disadvantages to be considered.  The disadvantages include:

  • Cost.  Due to the fact that a dedicated server is quite more expensive compared to that of a shared server, asses your needs before signing into a dedicated server web host plan.  For those on a limited budget, consider Virtual Private Server (VPS).  VPS offers many of the same benefits as a dedicated server, however, a much more cost efficient option;
  • Responsibility.  Opting to utilize a dedicated server demands you to be responsible for maintaining the efficient daily operations of your online venture.  If you know you can’t devote the time and effort required to be responsible for the task, then a dedicated server may not be the best option to meet your needs;
  • Experience.  Although experience is a good thing, however, in terms of utilizing a dedicated server it means you must have enough experience to successfully control the server’s functions to manage your website.

Understanding the pros and cons of a dedicated server is essential when selecting a web hosting service for your website.  The two major factors, however, to help guide you when making your final decision, take into consideration your budget and personal experience level.
