Dedicated Server Lingo 101
Like any other specialized field, dedicated server hosting comes with its own unique retinue of lingo and terminologies. Furthermore, just like any field you happen to be going in to, you’ll have to learn each of these mysterious codecs before being able to advance any further. Besides, knowing some of the stickier terms in the industry will save you some embarrassment at the water cooler. So it is with your ego and job security in mind that we present below some of our choice expressions used in the world of dedicated hosting. Read, memorize, repeat, Soldier: This here’s the crash course.
1. Operating System: First off the list is a basic term, but one you’ll be sunk without. If you aren’t in the know, the operating system is the basic core software that resides within your server’s walls. This is the root level “stuff” that manages all of your user’s requests, database pulls, etc. Without this, there would be no Internet experience. On that note:
2. Linux: This here is an operating system. Linux itself is a freeware version of old UNIX that many web masters prefer for their hardware. It’s an extremely popular platform, so if you were unaware of its existence, now is the time to read up. Linux comes in all sorts of various flavors and distributions, and is one of the most sought after softwares in the game. In other words, it’s very important.
3. SSH: This is another basic one, but if you’re new to the realm of dedicated server hosting, you may be just as clueless about SSH as you are about operating systems. SSH is a network protocol that allows users to access the shell script of their hardware. In other words, it’s a way to tunnel into your server and tell the dang thing to perform an action. This method also happens to be fairly secure, hence one of the “S”s in the name. This protocol also works with all sorts of programs, allowing you to tap directly beneath their skirts and perform various Web dirty works—if you’ll pardon the metaphor.
Daemon/Service: Lastly, we’ve got deamons and services to worry about. These are sub-programs that run completely without your involvement. Usually they perform various routines that need doing, but are so important they’d rather not have you around.
