Choosing the Features of Dedicated Hosting Plan
Dedicated hosting is widely known as the most robust and comprehensive hosting type available. Most people generalize all dedicated hosting plans into the same category, noting the extensive capabilities and server resources offered within this popular hosting environment. However, most also fail to distinguish one type of dedicated hosting from another, and don't realize how many options are available when choosing a dedicated hosting plan. There are various types of dedicated hosting choose from, and within each type there are differently sized plans that include different attributes. To optimize site performance and find the most suitable dedicated hosting plan for your website needs, consider the following tips pertaining to choosing the features of dedicated hosting plan.
Unmanaged, Partially Managed, and Fully Managed
Along with the extensive power offered by dedicated hosting plan, comes the additional responsibility of server administration and maintenance. Unfortunately, most webmasters are not experienced enough in server administration to handle all of the daily maintenance tasks associated with optimizing server performance and preventing server downtime. Thus, there are three main types of dedicated hosting plans to choose from – unmanaged, partially managed, and fully managed, with the latter being the most popular. While unmanaged hosting plans are the cheapest, they do not provide technical support or server administration, so the plan holder is obligated to maintain the performance of the server themselves, which can be a time-consuming process. Partially managed dedicated hosting plans offer technical assistance, but do not streamline server administration like fully managed hosting plans do. If you are unsure which type of dedicated hosting would be most suitable for your endeavors, then chances are you'll need a fully managed plan.
Choosing an Operating System
There are two main operating systems used within the dedicated hosting environment – Windows and Linux. Since the Linux operating system is a free open-source OS, Linux dedicated hosting plans are significantly cheaper than those that function within the Windows operating system. The majority of web hosting providers offer various distributions of UNIX or Linux (including Red Hat, CentOS, and Desbian) within their conventional plans. The Linux operating system has proven its reliability and stability after years of use in the web hosting industry. Thus, the only reason to pay extra for a Windows dedicated hosting plan would be to use Microsoft-based web applications like Microsoft SharePoint or Microsoft Server.
Choosing a Specific Server
Each dedicated hosting plan is powered by specific web servers, with each server varying in power and capabilities. Webmasters should base their decision on the needs of their websites and the size of their network. The majority of online business owners will find that a web server with 2 GB of random access memory will suffice for standard website operations, even within an extensive network of sites. However, if you have the need to run powerful automation software with your dedicated server then you'll want a server that has at least 4-8 GB of random access memory. Dedicated hosting plans range in cost from about $100 to more than $400, with the more powerful servers demanding a higher price, so budget is also a factor when choosing a server.
