Understanding the Modules of Your Hosting Control Panel
Every web hosting control panel is neatly organized into separate modules that effectively categorize administrative tasks. The web hosting control panel is designed to be user-friendly and accommodate the management of a large network of sites with ease. In essence, the control panel is the main interface that you will be interacting with as you build, maintain, and promote your websites. To simplify this process, each control panel is split into many modules that pertain to the basic functions and administrative tasks associated with website creation, management, and promotion. The following paragraphs describe how modules are used to simplify the administrative interface of your web hosting control panel.
Defining the Modules of Your Control Panel
Although every control panel has a different layout and overall functionality scheme, most popular control panels currently offered by the majority of web hosting providers include modules similar to the following:
- Promotion – contains links to various advertising agencies such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
- Partners – contains links to products/services that are affiliated with your hosting provider.
- Preferences – usually contains tutorials, as well as preferences and settings related to your hosting account information.
- Mail – contains links to important interfaces related to e-mail management and e-mail account creation.
- Files – allows you to access your file manager, create site backups, monitor disk space usage, and create FTP accounts.
- Logs – contains links to Web analytics applications, error logs, traffic statistics, and bandwidth reports.
- Security – allows you to change your password, password protect directories and files on your web server, and adjust various account security preferences.
- Domains – allows you to quickly register, transfer, park, and redirect domains within your domain manager.
- Databases – provides links to management interfaces for all of your basic database types including MySQL.
- Software - includes links to easy installation utilities that allow you to install scripts with a single click of your mouse.
- Advanced –allows you to control the software configuration, setup, and automation of your web server.
- Search Engine Optimization Tools – this is an additional module that some control panels have which contains links to search engine optimization products and services.
Learning to Use Your Control Panel
Fortunately for individuals that would like to take a hands-on approach to learning how to use their control panel, there are usually detailed video tutorials available within the control panel of your web hosting account. You will usually be able to find such tutorials, along with comprehensive knowledgebases and live customer support within the preferences section of your Control Panel. Some web hosting providers also give you free access to forums that are populated with experienced web hosting users.
Monitoring Server Usage
Aside from the main modules of your control panel which are located in the center of the user interface, there is also information displayed within a sidebar of the control panel which lets you view how much bandwidth/disk space is being used within your hosting account. This is also usually the area where any hosting limitations may be displayed. For example, if your hosting account allows you to create a limited amount of MySQL databases, you'll be able to see how many databases you have left to use within the sidebar on the left side of the user interface.
