Tips for Tracking Website Success in Your Hosting Control Panel

Building successful websites can be a complicated process that requires many skills, tools, resources, and an abundance of knowledge. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of website management that often goes overlooked is the tracking and monitoring of success, which can play a crucial role in the development of effective search engine optimization and traffic generation techniques. Fortunately, every web hosting plan includes tools within the control panel that will allow you to analyze, monitor, and track your success by reviewing website traffic statistics in various forms. The following paragraphs provide tips for tracking website success within the control panel of your hosting plan.

Using Website Analytics Properly

Most control panels provide at least two to three website analytics applications that can be used to generate daily, weekly, bimonthly, and monthly reports, which contain traffic statistics, trends, and an extensive amount of other useful data. Since the goal is to build consistent web traffic, preferably by optimizing your site content to attract visitors from search engines based on keywords, it is imperative to monitor the success of each webpage and learn the pros and cons of different types of reports for different kinds of websites. For example, if your site is a news blog that regularly publishes updated news stories about recent events and trends, then you will want to utilize the daily and weekly traffic reports to understand how effective each topic is at generating traffic on a temporary basis. On the other hand, if your website is based on a topic that is continuously popular (such as a particular product or niche), then you may find it more beneficial to generate bimonthly or monthly reports, as this will provide more accurate indicators of the ongoing success of your site.

Making Adjustments and Monitoring Changes

After learning how to generate and analyze web analytics reports, you'll want to begin making small incremental adjustments and then monitoring the statistical changes that occur within the following days and weeks. To maximize the success of the adjustments it is essential to wait for results before changing your strategy, and limit the amount of changes made to your strategy to a small amount each time. This will keep you from unknowingly stopping a technique that may actually be working, but has not yet shown its true potential. Of course, with the inconsistency of web traffic in general, it can be difficult to attribute traffic level rises to a specific change, however by carefully monitoring web analytics and limiting technique revisions you may be able to discover new methods that enhance your search engine optimization capabilities.

Separating Types of Traffic Generation Techniques

In order for the web analytics to actually produce meaningful results, you'll need to ensure that your traffic generation techniques are kept separate. In other words, if you are driving viral traffic (i.e. – traffic that originates from social sites like YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter) to the same webpages and/or website that you are attempting to refine your search engine optimization techniques for, it will be nearly impossible to determine whether or not your revisions related to SEO are bringing success. Since search engine optimization traffic is much more consistent and reliable than viral traffic in most cases, it may be best to isolate certain websites for search engine optimization skill building, and other websites for viral traffic technique skill building.
